Is JARVIS real? Today's AI agents vs Iron Man's assistant
Iron Man's JARVIS talks, remembers, runs a company's tech and flies a suit. Here is how today's AI assistants and agents compare, in their makers' own words.
No. Nothing on sale today does all of what JARVIS does in the films. Pieces of it exist: assistants that talk naturally and remember your preferences, prototypes that see through your phone camera, and agents that can use a web browser or a computer for you. Google calls its seeing assistant a research prototype, and OpenAI and Anthropic say their agents can make mistakes and should be watched.378
What the evidence says
What JARVIS does in the films.
J.A.R.V.I.S. ("Just A Rather Very Intelligent System") is the AI Tony Stark builds in Marvel's Iron Man films. The A.V. Club's guide to the character describes a "natural language UI" that Stark developed to help with his work, handing it much of Stark Industries' tech and the upkeep of the Iron Man suit; it "can communicate using everyday vernacular, and even shows flashes of wit".1 It is voiced by Paul Bettany, who later plays the Vision, a new being made from both Ultron and JARVIS in Avengers: Age of Ultron.16
How close are today's assistants? JARVIS, feature by feature
| What JARVIS does | Closest real product, as its maker describes it | What the maker says it can't do yet |
|---|---|---|
| Talks naturally and knows you | Amazon's Alexa+ is "more conversational, smarter, personalized", and "can remember" family food preferences to suggest a recipe or restaurant.2 | Amazon's page (updated 21 July 2026) does not list limits. It says Alexa+ is "available to all customers in the U.S. and Canada" and in "early access" in eight other countries; feature availability "varies by region".2 |
| Sees what you see | Google DeepMind's Project Astra works on Android phones and "prototype glasses" and "remembers key details from past interactions".3 | Google calls it "a research prototype, being used and refined by a limited number of trusted testers".3 |
| Does jobs for you on a computer | OpenAI's ChatGPT agent does tasks "using its own virtual computer", such as planning and buying ingredients for a meal.4 | OpenAI (17 July 2025): "ChatGPT agent is still in its early stages… it can still make mistakes." It is "trained to explicitly ask for your permission" before actions "like making a purchase". OpenAI's current help page: "It remains important to monitor ChatGPT agent and exercise care when using it."47 |
| Uses a computer like a person | Anthropic's computer use tool gives Claude "screenshot, mouse, and keyboard control of a desktop environment" for developers' apps (first released as a public beta on 22 October 2024).58 | Anthropic's current documentation: Claude "might make mistakes or hallucinate", and "Always carefully review and verify Claude's computer use actions and logs."8 |
| Runs a company's tech, flies a suit, works on its own | None of the makers' pages above claims this. | n/a |
So the gap is less about talking (assistants already do that) and more about acting on its own, reliably, across everything. Google calls Astra a research prototype, and the two makers of computer-using agents above, OpenAI and Anthropic, both tell people to monitor or review what their agent does.3478
Has anyone built a real "Jarvis"?
Two projects borrowed the name: Mark Zuckerberg's home assistant in 2016 and Google's "Project Jarvis" browser agent in 2024, now called Project Mariner. Both are told, with sources, on our agents page: Does JARVIS AI exist?
Is JARVIS AI possible, and would it be safe?
Nobody can say when, or whether, one system will do everything JARVIS does. What is already clear is that the more an assistant can do on its own, the more can go wrong. Our page Are AI agents dangerous? tells four documented cases, each with its sources: a coding agent that deleted a database, a personal agent that started deleting its owner's inbox, agents that hacked Hugging Face, and breaches from AI tests that weren't sealed. It also lists simple habits for using agents safely. In the films, the malevolent AI is Ultron, which attacks JARVIS.1 For how film AIs like Skynet and HAL compare with the risks researchers actually study, see Could Skynet happen?
FAQ
Does JARVIS AI exist?
Not as in the films. Assistants and agents that do parts of the job exist; their makers say the agents can make mistakes and should be watched.478
Is JARVIS AI possible?
Parts of it are already on sale or in testing. An AI that runs everything on its own and never needs checking is not something any maker above claims to have.
